Advocating for Agricultural Innovation
Alberta Pork Executive Director Darcy Fitzgerald recently met with Bow River Member of Parliament David Bette to discuss his Private Member’s Bill C-273, which is currently working its way through Parliament.
The bill aims to modernize Canada’s approval process for agricultural products. It would create a 90-day provisional approval pathway for eligible feeds, fertilizers, seeds and crop protection products that have been already been approved by trusted international regulators. It would also allow Health Canada to use scientific assessments from trusted foreign regulators when reviewing veterinary drugs.
For pork producers, this could mean faster access to new feed ingredients and veterinary products while maintaining Canada’s strong health and safety standards. Reducing unnecessary disruption and regulatory delays would help Canadian producers benefit sooner from tools already being used safely in other countries.

Sustainable Farming for Pork Producers
Sustainable farming is about making practical changes that help protect the land, use resources wisely and keep farms productive for years to come. For pork producers, this can include improving manure and nutrient management, using less energy, reducing fuel use or adding renewable energy to the operation.
These practices can offer real benefits, including lower operating costs, better use of water and nutrients, improved soil health and greater protection against drought and extreme weather. They can also help farms become more efficient, meet changing consumer expectations and remain competitive as new markets and opportunities develop.

Alberta Pork is seeking producer feedback on the potential inclusion of a porcine by-product feed restriction within the CPE program. Your input will be reviewed by the Board of Directors before a decision is made-but only surveys received by July 31 will be considered.
