Pig farm terminology
Term | Definition |
Abattoir | Another word for slaughterhouse. |
Barrow | Male pig castrated before sexual maturity. |
Boar | Male pig. |
Farrow | To give birth to piglets. |
Feeder pigs | Young pigs around 6 – 10 weeks old. Often produced by one farm then purchased and finished on another farm. |
Finishing | The process of feeding a pig so that it reaches market weight. |
Gilt | A young female pig that has not produced a litter of piglets. |
Grower pig | A pig that weighs between 40 and 220 pounds. |
Market Hog | A pig that weighs around 280 pounds. It is approximately 6 months old, and was raised to for slaughter. |
Sow | A female pig that has given birth to at least one litter of piglets. |
Swine | A general term for all kinds of pigs. |
Weaner pig | A pig that has been recently weaned from its mother. |
