Farm Labour

Finding and keeping good workers is one of the biggest challenges facing Alberta’s pork producers. Skilled farm labour is essential to maintaining high standards of animal care, production, and barn management. Alberta Pork works with producers and industry partners to share information about programs and resources that help with hiring, training, and compliance.

Labour Programs and Hiring Options

Many farms depend on both local and international workers to keep operations running smoothly. If you’re looking to hire, several programs are available to support employers:

  • Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program – Allows employers to hire foreign workers when no Canadians are available.
  • Job Bank and Alberta Agriculture Job Connector – Online tools to help find qualified candidates or advertise available positions.

Before hiring, make sure your farm meets the eligibility requirements for these programs and that all documentation, wages, and housing standards comply with federal and provincial rules.

Employment Standards and Compliance

All Alberta farm employers are responsible for meeting employment standards and ensuring a safe workplace. This includes:

  • Following Alberta’s Employment Standards Code for wages, hours, and working conditions.
  • Meeting the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to provide a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Registering with the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) to protect both employers and employees in case of injury.

Keeping accurate records, providing clear communication, and offering proper training are all key parts of compliance and good management.

Safe and Fair Workplaces

Creating a respectful and safe workplace helps attract and retain good employees. Providing clear expectations, fair pay, and a commitment to health and safety not only meets legal requirements—it also builds a positive workplace culture and supports long-term success.
