Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) is a viral disease causing vomiting, diarrhea, and high death loss in pigs. Is currently a mjaor concern for Canadian hog farmers, and we are looking at it closely to make sure we are prepared if PEDv should spread into Alberta.
Although this disease cannot be transmitted to humans and is not a food safety concern, this coronavirus can be devastating for your herd. The PED virus causes acute outbreaks of watery diarrhea in naïve sow herds. In nursing piglets the disease can be severe with up to 100% mortality. In growing pigs, there is widespread diarrhea with low mortality.
A Green Marker indicates no instance of PEDv on producer premises.
A Red Marker indicates province or state with infected premises. They include a numeral denoting the amount of PEDv cases. an exclamation point (!) indicates 100 or more cases in area.
