Transportation Quality Assurance
Ensuring Animal Welfare and Food Safety on the Move
The transportation of pigs is a critical step in the pork production chain—one that directly affects animal welfare, pork quality, and public perception of the industry. When done properly, transport maintains animal comfort, reduces stress, and supports the ethical standards that define Canadian pork.
In Alberta, swine transportation is guided by federal and provincial regulations under the Health of Animals Act and Transportation of Animals Regulations. These rules set minimum standards for rest, space, weather protection, and humane handling. But producers and transporters across Alberta go beyond compliance by following industry best practices promoted through Transport Quality Assurance (TQA).
The TQA program provides certification and training for anyone responsible for loading, moving, or unloading animals. Participants learn about proper animal handling techniques, recognizing stress and fatigue, managing temperature and ventilation, and responding to emergencies.
Alberta Pork provides TQA training
There’s no cost and encourages all producers and transporters to maintain certification to ensure consistent, safe practices throughout the supply chain.
Proper transport starts before animals leave the farm. It includes pre-trip planning, inspecting trailers for cleanliness and safety, and ensuring pigs are fit for transport. During transit, handlers must monitor conditions closely and adjust for temperature or weather challenges. Upon arrival, unloading should be calm, efficient, and respectful to minimize stress and potential injury.
By adhering to transportation quality assurance principles, Alberta’s pork producers demonstrate leadership in animal welfare and product integrity. This commitment not only benefits the pigs and the people who care for them but also strengthens consumer confidence in Alberta’s world-class pork products.
