Alberta’s farmers have illustrated their continued commitment to farm safety by working with the Government of Alberta (GOA) to provide grassroots feedback on the new occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations proposed in the Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act.
The AgCoalition, which Alberta Pork belongs to, represents 97 per cent of farmers and ranchers throughout the province and was the voice of agriculture in developing the new regulations. Through its membership, the AgCoalition diligently reviewed each of the 142 GOA recommendations to ensure they met the expectations of farmers and ranchers in Alberta.
Starting on December 1, 2018, these new changes that address workplace hazards, safety training and maintenance of equipment will only affect farm sites with waged, non-family farm and ranch workers.
The newly-formed, industry-led organization called AgSafe Alberta will work alongside farmers and ranchers as an independent health and safety association. AgSafe will develop programming and additional resources to help farmers and ranchers implement the new OHS rules.
