We believe that the provisions currently available within various government departments (federal, provincial and municipal) are adequate to deal with pollution situations. Alberta Pork does not condone willful polluters at any level.

The above statement represents the major pillars of Alberta Pork's sustainable environment initiatives. As further support Alberta Pork's Board members, Sustainable Environment Committee and staff are playing active roles by participating directly in various initiatives both externally and within the organization. We have initiated and/or partially funded many research initiatives in excess of $2 million over the past few years.

There are enhanced communication efforts with our members and the general public. In the future, Alberta Pork is initiating or will investigate the effects of air quality on human health, water quality and the role that third party accreditation of our practices plays in long term sustainably and prosperity for our producers.

Alberta Pork is strongly committed to representing producers in sustainable environment over the long term. We will participate actively in any ventures that affect producers while at the same time assuring and protecting the general public interest with regard to the environment.

Much of the agricultural industry is currently involved in the issue of greenhouse gas management in some fashion. The Government of Canada is working on a plan to establish a domestic system for trading carbon credits between individuals or groups who currently hold an excess of carbon and those who are net emitters of greenhouse gases and are required to offset these emissions.
