Beneficial Management Practices Manuals

A publication entitled Beneficial Management Practices, Environmental Manual for Hog Producers in Albertacovers a comprehensive list of topics ranging from legal issues and conflict prevention, to site selection and planning, manure storage and land application and disposal of farm waste, including chemical and veterinary waste.

Alberta Pork and Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development collaborated on the manual and anticipate it will be updated every two to three years with proven technologies and information on environmental practices and regulations.

After consulting the manual, most farmers will find they are already following most, if not all, BMPs. However, if there is room for improvement, the book provides management options and sound, up-to-date, technical information. Producers will also find it a good companion resource when creating their environmental farm plan.
