Sustainable Environment - Environment Issues

Protection of the environment through good management practices is a key responsibility of pig producers. By working to established standards for storage, treatment and spreading, the risk of creating an odour nuisance to neighbours or contaminating water courses or ground water can be avoided. Public awareness of environmental issues has increased in recent years. Therefore, it is essential for the industry to demonstrate good practice and adhere strictly to legislative requirements. Producers are taking steps to minimize any impacts on the environment and within their communities or with their neighbours. New research and technologies are helping to improve all aspects of hog production.

One of Alberta Pork's strategic objectives is “To ensure a sustainable healthy environment for the public and ourselves”. This is achieved by being actively involved in the legislative process, through the provision of information and guidance to producers and by communicating to the general public the measures that pig producers take to protect the environment.
