April 9, 2008
Dear Fellow Producer,
Further developments have been made on the National Cull Breeding Swine Program (CBSP). Producers can apply for the CBSP starting April 14, 2008. Please find attached the Canadian Pork Council news release announcing the program start date.
To Date Program Details Include:
- The program will begin on April 14, 2008, (the date that program applications will be posted on the Canadian Pork Council website)
- The Cull Breeding Swine Program will be retroactive to November 1, 2007
- Producers are eligible for the per animal payment ($225 per sow/boar) less the selling price received for the animal
- An additional per head amount will be available to cover slaughter and disposal costs
Conditions on the Program:
- In order to participate, producers must agree to completely empty one entire barn of breeding stock and not refill the barn for a three year period (you may be able to restock the barn with feeder/market hogs, as long as they are not ‘breeding animals’)
- If barns are found restocked with breeding stock before the three years have elapsed, producers must pay back in full + 10% penalty + 5% in interest per year
- Producers with leased barns require owner permission to participation on this program
- Payments are issued when the barn is confirmed empty
- The program only applies to breeding stock (sows and boars – no gilts)
- Reimbursements will be based on receipts (it is vital that you keep all sale records, without them, animals sold will not be eligible)
- After April 14, 2008, animals sold for commercial human food consumption will not be eligible for the program.
- Animals must be slaughtered humanely and disposed in a standard that meets program requirements
- A list of qualified “off-farm” disposal options will be available in the future
Important:
- Applications will be available on the CPC website starting on April 14, 2008 www.cpc-ccp.com as well as on the Alberta Pork website at www.albertapork.com
- After April 14, 2008, culled breeding stock must not enter the food chain if producers wish to be eligible for this program
- As soon as application forms are available, Alberta Pork will mail applications to all Alberta producers
- Options for disposal of breeding stock through this program will be outlined on the application form
- The Canadian Pork Council has set up a toll free number for producer questions regarding the application process 1-877-655-2567
This program will be administered on a first come first serve basis, for this reason, I encourage producers to act quickly by completing applications and supplying all supporting documentation as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Herman Simons Chairman Alberta Pork
