The Alberta Pork Producers Alliance (APPA) was established
in April 2005 by some of the province’s largest pig production companies and
currently represents 25 - 30% of the 170,000 sows in Alberta. Excluding the Hutterite community,
that owns approximately one-third of all pigs, and family farms that employ no
outside labour, APPA members account for around 50% of jobs on hog farms in Alberta.
The group has been very active in working together to address some of the
challenges that face its members and others in hog production, notably labour
and skills related issues and, in particular, the shortage of suitably
qualified and experienced staff. Such issues are a major constraint to
improving efficiency and to further development of the pork industry in Alberta.
The APPA consults regularly with Alberta Pork and together, they address
various industry issues as they arise.
Some of the areas that are being worked continuously include:
- Representing the pork
industry to relevant provincial and federal bodies such as Service Canada,
Alberta Government departments and Immigration Canada
- Procedures for immigration of
overseas staff
- Promotion of the group
internationally to attract skilled workers to the province
- Promotion of careers in the
pork industry to the general public, especially to schools and colleges
- Joint advertising for staff
at home and overseas
- Training of pork production
staff
- Health and safety issues
