Alberta pork producers raise about 3.5 million pigs per year, which represents about 15 percent of Canadian production. Pork is the fourth most valuable commodity in the Alberta economy, behind beef, wheat and canola. Alberta is the fourth largest producer of hogs in Canada, behind Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.
Alberta has approximately 1,000 active pork producers and each of those operations makes a significant contribution to the local community, both by creating employment opportunities, and by purchasing goods and services from numerous local providers.
