Alberta's pork producers approved a revised APPDC Marketing Plan during a plebiscite conducted by the provincial Marketing Council at the end of April, 1996. A total of 1,774 producers participated with 1,508 (85%) voting in favour of the revised plan. The total voters represented 44.3% of the province's active producers and accounted for approximately 70% of Alberta's total pork production. This producer endorsement allowed the APPDC to continue beyond a sunset date of December 31,1996 and to modify its purposes.
The revised Plan updated the original 1969 Plan while retaining the essence of what made that Plan effective. The new Plan:
- set out the purposes of the APPDC;
- allowed greater flexibility in terms of the type of selling system that could be adopted by the APPDC;
- removed the ability of the APPDC to acquire a processor;
- set out the regulation making powers;
- allowed for changes to be made in the number of annual meetings held in each district, based on what producers in each district desired.
