Alberta Pork Swine Traceability

Alberta Pork launched the Alberta Pork Swine Traceability System covering all farm-to-slaughter hog movement tracking on January 4th, 2011.

If you are shipping to Maple Leaf, Trochu Meats, or to Olymel and Sturgeon Valley Pork through the Western Hog Exchange, just continue to do what you are already doing as we have integrated the traceability requirements into their existing documents. The only difference is that you must keep a copy of the document on-farm for five years (this can be a scanned copy retained in a computer file).

If you are shipping to any other slaughter destinations within Alberta such as a provincial abattoir, you must complete an Alberta Pork Swine Manifest (these can be obtained from you local abattoir or by calling 1-877-247-7675 (PORK). Again, a copy must be kept on-farm for five years.

Reporting farm-to-slaughter movement is not your responsibility but maintaining a copy of the manifest is. Processors and abattoirs are forwarding movement data from the various documents to Livestock Identification Service, Alberta Pork’s data service provider, within 48 hours of the movement’s completion.

Information sharing agreements with the Government of Alberta have been signed and access to movement data is limited to those approved by Alberta Pork.  In the coming year, Alberta Pork will be working with producers and industry partners to extend the Alberta Swine Traceability system to include farm-to farm movement.

If you require any assistance or have any questions, please call Alberta Pork at 1-877-247-7675 (PORK).
