Terminal cash hog prices were reported narrowly lower in both the ISM and WCB due to lingering effects of stalling cutout prices which have limited the seasonal price of slaughter hogs for the past two months.

The cash hog complex was reported uneven for the week of April 23-27 on deteriorating fundamentals and tightening processor margins.  Dropping future prices were also seen as a bearish factor with fears of slower pork exports forcing some traders to liquidate their positions.

Alberta Pork Pricing & Marketing Report May 7-11, 2012

Cash hog prices on both sides of the border were reported sharply lower on the lack of fresh demand and its inability to rebound.  Limited packer interest spurred the futures market lower as traders viewed the lack of buying of slaughter ready hogs as bearish for this time period when demand from both consumer and packers are typically brisk.

The cash hog market was reported mixed as US base prices lost on average around $1.25 due to the lack of buyer interest as fundamental signs pointed in any direction but up.  Canadian prices however, were reported mostly higher due the weaker value of the Loonie.
