Alberta Pork Pricing & Marketing Report: week of February 20-24, 2012

Terminal cash hog prices slipped lower for the second consecutive week as processors took a step back and cautiously bought slaughter ready hogs to fill their orders.  Inconsistent wholesale pork values were seen as a limiting factor.  Margins improved compared to previous week, but packers found it hard to create adequate country movement.

January marked a sign of recovery for both the futures and cash markets as industry participants returned from the holiday’s with optimism that the hog complex would push higher into the spring, as it historically does.
